DIABETES AND THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY
Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, claiming close to 21 million people.
Diabetes is the cause of more than 60 percent of the non-traumatic lower-limb amputations in the US. Diabetes symptoms often show up initially in your feet. Who is at risk? Diabetes is the 4th leading cause of death among the African-American community. About 73 percent of Diabetics also have high blood pressure. People with diabetes are 2 to 4 times more likely to have heart disease or suffer a stroke than people without diabetes.
The good news: Diabetes can be treated. Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented.
• A simple foot exam can reveal the first signs and symptoms of Diabetes.
• African Americans can take charge and prevent Type 2 Diabetes.
• African-Americans can take charge and prevent complications of Type 2 Diabetes, including stroke, heart disease and severe foot problems, i.e.,. non-healing foot ulcerations.

When we first met there were doctors recommending amputation of my leg, but Dr. Greenberger was adamant it could be saved. His compassion for his patients and knowledge not only saved my leg, but helped me to cope with my procedure. Dr. Greenberger’s availability at all hours of the day and night to talk to me was priceless and his post surgery care and tolerance of my impatient attitude was stellar. I have not only become a dedicated patient but a life-long friend.
