EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE

THERAPY

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive option for the treatment of chronic heel pain known as Plantar Fasciitis. It is intended to be used by patients who are 18 years of age or older who have symptoms of chronic Plantar Fasciitis that have lasted for 6 months or more and who have tried other conservative therapies without success.

Plantar Fasciitis is a condition caused by overuse or injury to the plantar fascia, the ligament that helps to maintain the structure of the foot. The plantar fascia acts like a shock-absorbing bowstring that supports the arch in your foot. However, if the tension becomes too great, it causes small tears in the fascia. The repetitive stretching and tearing due to overuse, improper shoes, or poor foot structure can cause the fascia to become irritated or inflamed.

Research in ESWT that began in the 1980's is most well known for the treatment of kidney stones. Over time it has evolved and in 2000 was approved by the FDA as a treatment for heel pain sufferers who have been unsuccessful in managing pain through traditional methods.

ESWT releases high intensity sound waves in the tissue being treated. Dr. Greenberger specializes in treatment with the Swiss DolorClast® Method. Patients receiving treatment using this method benefit from a gentle application of shockwave energy. The density of the shockwaves gradually builds up in the affected area during each treatment session. The body responds to the treatment by increasing circulation and metabolism around the affected soft tissue, initiating and aiding the body’s own healing process.

ESWT is an innovative treatment for suffers of chronic heel pain and offers an effective treatment that eliminates the risks associated with surgery and significantly shortens recuperation time, increasing the quality of life for the patient.
When we first met there were doctors recommending amputation of my leg, but Dr. Greenberger was adamant it could be saved. His compassion for his patients and knowledge not only saved my leg, but helped me to cope with my procedure. Dr. Greenberger’s availability at all hours of the day and night to talk to me was priceless and his post surgery care and tolerance of my impatient attitude was stellar. I have not only become a dedicated patient but a life-long friend.
