Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Another Name for Painful Feet
Pain,
burning, numbness and tingling in your feet may be signs of tarsal tunnel syndrome
(TTS). Similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist, TTS is caused by compression
of the nerve that runs along the calf and around the inside of the ankle. The
resulting pain can occur when standing, walking or wearing a particular type of
shoe.
The causes of TTS are varied. Injury, trauma, fractures, dislocations, sprains and flat feet can all create pressure on the nerve. So can localized tumors and bony malformations.
Because the symptoms of TTS can be confused with heel spurs, plantar fasciitis and even rheumatoid arthritis or diabetes, it is important to see us for an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment plan.
We will perform several simple, noninvasive tests to diagnose TTS. The tests manipulate the foot and tap the compressed area to create the symptoms of tingling and burning. We may also conduct electrodiagnostic tests to see how well electrical impulses run through the nerve or order a magnetic resonance image (MRI).
Treatment is usually conservative and may include
• Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to reduce inflammation;
• Corticosteroids to reduce swelling and relieve pain;
• Wearing special orthotic devices, including arch supports; and
• Changing your shoe style.
If conservative treatment fails to bring relief, we may recommend surgery that opens the tunnel through which the nerve passes, relieving the pressure on the nerve. The surgery takes about 30–45 minutes, and patients should allow three weeks to heal before putting weight on the affected foot.
Remember, ignoring pain in your foot can lead to larger problems. See us if you suffer from any ongoing pain to get the right diagnosis and treatment.
