Onychomycosis: Treating Toenail Fungal Infections
Onychomycosis is a challenging and common health problem that involves a fungal infection underlying the surface of the nail. Ultimately, the nail becomes thick, brittle, yellow-brown in color and odorous.
A fungal infection occurs when fungi particles accumulate under the nail, causing sufferers to experience a change in the appearance of the nail plate. Left untreated, the infection can spread to other toenails, the skin or fingernails.
Contributing factors include:
• Recurrent athlete's foot infection
• Poor cleansing
• Extreme perspiration
• Decreased immunity or systemic disease
Because the fungal organism lives in and under the nail plate, the delivery of medications presents a challenge. Two newer oral medications that successfully treat toenail fungus, terbinafine hydrochloride and itraconazole, are usually taken for several months, although approximately nine months are needed for new, healthy nail growth. Extremely thick nails will also require periodic debridement.
Topical treatments are usually less effective than oral medications and work best when the fungal infection is minor. The prescription medication ciclopirox should be applied three times per week for several months. In some cases, medications are unsuccessful, and removal of the infected nail is performed to relieve pain and treat the fungus infection.
The best treatment for toenail fungus is always prevention. We will discuss the most appropriate options to treat unsightly fungus and leave your feet feeling and looking healthy.
